GenCyber is a summer camp that is offered for K-12 students and they are hoping to increase the awareness of cyber security to students as well as inform their students about all of the different career opportunities that can be found in cyber security. The goal of GenCyber is to inspire the next generation of cyber stars.  Gencyber is also hoping to increase the diversity of students in cybersecurity at the K- 12 level. They understand the necessity that there is for cybersecurity professionals and are hoping that by providing more opportunities that this can be solved.

The goals of the GenCyber program are to:

  • Ignite, sustain, and increase awareness of K12 cybersecurity content and cybersecurity postsecondary and career opportunities for participants through year-round engagement;
  • Increase student diversity in cybersecurity college and career readiness pathways at the K-12 level; and
  • Facilitate teacher readiness within a teacher learning community to learn, develop, and deliver cybersecurity content for the K-12 classroom in collaboration with other nationwide initiatives.

E-Mates

Introduction to Subnetting

The E-Mates Lab provides demos and easy tutorials on various cybersecurity topics that we may cover on the CyberTalk Show. For this week, we demonstrated the basics of Subnetting. By following the Introduction to Subnetting E-Mates lab, we break down the concepts behind subnetting, the benefits of subnetting, and provide sample subnetting exercises that you can try out on your own!

Cyber Opportunity

For this month’s cyber opportunity, NCL, or the National Cyber League, is officially starting their spring competition season! You guys might have already heard some things about NCL (it is pretty famous), but it’s essentially a platform for cybersecurity evaluation and education. Every fall and spring, they host competitions for high school students to test out their cyber skills. Examples of exercises or topics covered include but are not limited to: cryptography, forensic questions, enumeration and exploitation, scanning, open source intelligence, and network traffic analysis!

  • To register for the NCL season, you must be at least 13 years old and enrolled in a US high school, collegiate institution, apprenticeship, or academic boot camp. As for now, the competition is only available to residents in the United States.

Here’s a quick timeline of how the NCL season will go:

  1. Gymnasium opens: February 15
  2. Preseason: March 5 – March 22
    1. This period sorts players into different brackets. This is individual!
  3. Individual Game: March 26 – March 28
    1. This is the individual competitive section of the season!
  4. Team Game: April 9 – April 11
    1. This is the collaborative competitive section of the season. You can form teams and work together with your teammates to solve problems and answer questions.
  5. Gymnasium closes: May 28

And there you have it! It’s just a casual sign up, but you can definitely gain a lot of valuable experience and knowledge from the NCL competition itself. Here’s the link to registration. Good luck and happy competing! 🙂
